APSC CCE Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Education, Attempts & Category Relaxation Complete Guide
May 20, 2026 · Sadhna Editorial

Here is the nightmare scenario: You spend 18 months preparing for APSC CCE. You nail the Prelims. You clear the Mains. You even feel good about the Interview. Then, during document verification, a clerk looks at your certificate and says — "Sorry, your degree does not meet the requirement."
It happens. Every year. To smart, hardworking people who simply did not read the eligibility fine print.
This guide is your insurance policy. Read it once. Bookmark it. And never worry about eligibility again.
APSC CCE 2026: The Basics
The Assam Public Service Commission Combined Competitive Examination (APSC CCE) is the gateway to Class I and Class II posts in the Assam state government — including the prestigious Assam Civil Service (ACS) and Assam Police Service (APS).
Before you even look at the syllabus, you must clear three eligibility filters: Nationality, Age, and Educational Qualification.
Nationality: The First Gate
You must be:
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries, etc., with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Note: Categories (b) through (e) must produce a valid eligibility certificate issued by the Government of Assam.
Age Limit: The Number That Eliminates the Most Aspirants
This is where dreams get crushed silently — because people miscalculate their age by a few months.
| Category | Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| General (Unreserved) | 21 years | 38 years |
| OBC / MOBC | 21 years | 41 years (+3 years) |
| SC / ST | 21 years | 43 years (+5 years) |
| PWD (General) | 21 years | 48 years (+10 years) |
| PWD (OBC/MOBC) | 21 years | 51 years (+13 years) |
| PWD (SC/ST) | 21 years | 53 years (+15 years) |
| Ex-Servicemen | 21 years | As per Assam Govt rules |
Critical: Age is calculated as of January 1 of the examination year (or as per the specific notification). Always verify the cutoff date in the official APSC notification. A single month's difference can disqualify you.
Educational Qualification: Not Just "Any Degree"
This is where most confusion happens. Let us be crystal clear:
Minimum Requirement
A Bachelor's Degree from a university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or an equivalent qualification.
What "Recognized" Actually Means
- Your university must be listed on the UGC website as a recognized institution.
- Distance / Open University degrees are accepted if the university is UGC-recognized and the program is approved by Distance Education Bureau (DEB).
- Foreign degrees are accepted only if they are declared equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
- Professional degrees (Engineering, Medical, Law) are valid as long as the institution is recognized.
The Final Year Student Dilemma
Can you apply if you are in your final year of graduation? Yes — with conditions.
APSC typically allows final-year students to appear for the Prelims, provided they can submit proof of passing the degree examination before the Main Examination or at the time of document verification (whichever is earlier). Check the specific notification every year — this rule can change.
Number of Attempts: How Many Shots Do You Get?
| Category | Maximum Attempts |
|---|---|
| General | 6 attempts |
| OBC / MOBC | 9 attempts |
| SC / ST | Unlimited (until upper age limit) |
| PWD | General: 9 attempts | OBC: 9 attempts | SC/ST: Unlimited |
An "attempt" is counted only if you appear for the Preliminary Examination. Applying but not appearing does not count.
Physical Standards (For ACS & APS Posts Only)
If you are targeting Assam Civil Service (ACS) or Assam Police Service (APS), physical standards apply:
For Male Candidates
- Height: Minimum 163 cm (general), with relaxations for certain categories.
- Chest: Minimum 84 cm (unexpanded), 89 cm (expanded).
For Female Candidates
- Height: Minimum 150 cm (general), with category relaxations.
These standards are verified during the medical examination after the interview stage. Start measuring yourself now if you are borderline.
The Document Checklist You Cannot Ignore
When APSC calls you for document verification, you will need:
- High School (HSLC) Certificate & Marksheet — for age proof.
- Higher Secondary (HSSLC) Certificate & Marksheet.
- Graduation Degree & Marksheet — all semesters / years.
- Caste Certificate (if applying under reserved category).
- Domicile / Resident Certificate of Assam.
- PWD Certificate (if applicable) from a designated medical authority.
- Photo ID (Aadhaar / Voter ID / Passport).
Pro tip: Get your caste and domicile certificates updated now. Do not wait for the notification. These take weeks to procure.
Common Eligibility Traps (And How to Avoid Them)
- Trap 1 — Age miscalculation: Always calculate age as of the notification's cutoff date, not your birthday this year.
- Trap 2 — Unrecognized university: Verify your university on ugc.gov.in. "Deemed" does not always mean "recognized."
- Trap 3 — Backlog degrees: If your degree is from a university with ongoing accreditation issues, get an equivalence certificate proactively.
- Trap 4 — Category certificate format: APSC has a specific format for caste certificates. The one you got for college admission may not work.
- Trap 5 — Attempt confusion: Only Prelims appearances count. Do not self-disqualify by counting applications.
Eligibility Is Step Zero. Preparation Is Step One.
If you have read this far, you now know more about APSC CCE eligibility than 90% of aspirants. That is not an exaggeration — most people rely on WhatsApp forwards and coaching center rumors.
But knowing you are eligible is just the starting line. The real race is 18+ months of disciplined preparation across Prelims, Mains, and Interview.
